What an adult should be able to do

Dr. Helen Smith, a forensic psychologist and blogger, better known to some as the Instawife, is now an advice columnist,  Ask Dr. Helen at Pajamas Media,

She's off to a fast start asking "What should an adult be able to do?"

I've combined and categorized her answers and those of the commenters and threw in one or two of my own.

Understand and be able to use a basic handgun (Helen)
Drive a stick shift (Helen)
Swim a reasonable distance (Helen)
Be able to use basic tools
Cook a simple meal
Change a tire
Build a fire
Read a map
Sew on a button
Know basic first aid
Know how to recognize a heart attack and a stroke and what to do

Financial

Balance a checkbook
Save and invest
Understand the compounding of interest

Digital

Surf the web and send an email (Helen)

Use Google

Inter-personal

Keep some things to yourself

Make a sincere apology
Accept a compliment with grace
